Why Underfloor Heating?

Underfloor heating is becoming popular in Australia for multiple reasons. It is a highly efficient and effective heating system for your home in the cooler months. Another great benefit is that because it is fitted under your floor surface it means there is more space for you to design your home with features you want or perhaps even a bold new minimalist look. Underfloor heating is not just an effective way of transmitting heat but also maintaining a healthy living environment.

Here some more benefits of underfloor heating:

  • Underfloor heating works under most floor surfaces including stone, tile, wood, concrete, vinyl or carpeted floors (as long as the carpet isn’t too thick - a 1.5 tog is generally considered the maximum suitable thickness).
  • There are significant savings on electricity costs.
  • Radiators and other similar devices heat the air closest to them, creating cold spots in the room. Underfloor heating evenly distributes warmth throughout the whole room.
  • Extremely easy to install either in a new build or a renovation.
  • Underfloor heating can make your home more hygienic – a warmer floor temperature is inhospitable to dust mites.
  • The floor heating system is controlled by a smart thermostat which means your floors will be warm when you need them.

There are two types of underfloor heating systems:

Electronic

  • As the name suggests, an electric system uses electricity to warm your floors via heating cables fitted underneath your floor surface.
  • Electric can be installed either in a new build or renovation process if you are changing your flooring.
  • These systems are generally cheaper than hydronic systems.
  • It’s possible to install an electric system yourself.

Hydronic

  • Otherwise known as a wet system, water is pumped through pipes laid onto a subfloor, before the new surface is added on top.
  • The water is pumped through pipes laid onto a subfloor before the new surface is added on top
  • Hydronic is installed when building a new home.
  • Generally, hydronic systems are more expensive than electric but are more efficient in the long run.
  • You will need a specialist to install Hydronic underfloor heating.

Is Underfloor Heating worth it?

Although the cost of installing underfloor heating is higher than the installation cost of traditional heating systems, there are various options available to suit your budget. Keeping in mind that underfloor heating provides substantial cost savings on your energy bills in the longer term.
