How easy is it to install underfloor heating?

With the latest technology under floor heating has become easy to install if you have opted for an electric floor heating system. If you have opted for hydronic underfloor heating this will require a specialist to install.

When it comes to electric floor heating there are three options to choose from:

  1. Under Tile Mat Heater
    For installation directly under tiles or in floors with thin leveling screeds.
  2. In Screed Cable or Mat Heater
    For in-screed heating under most floor finishes. Available in different sizes.
  3. Undercarpet Heating
    Heating for under fitted carpet. The undercarpet heater is a twin conductor heating cable with primary fluoropolymer insulation sandwiched between two layers of reinforced aluminum foil.

Installing Electric Mat Heaters
Electric mat floor heaters unique design ensures for a simple and quick installation of floor heating with guaranteed and even heat across the complete floor surface. The mat heater is designed with adhesive strips to simply roll out and attach to the surface. 

Electric Mat Heaters are available in two heat outputs: 150 watts per m2 for use under most floor finishes above screeds 200 watts per m2 for bathrooms as it offers a fast heat up time.

Some things to consider when it comes to installing Electric floor heating:

  • Take some time to plan the layout considering all obstacles e.g. kitchen cupboards, bathroom sinks etc. Ensure mat will fit before starting.
  • Before installing you should make an allowance for the electrical connections. Electric heating can be DIY installed but must be commissioned by a licensed electrical contractor who will connect the Thermostat to the heater & mains supply on an RCD to comply with current AS/NZS 3000 wiring regulations.
